Brighton Photo Biennial 2010: New Documents, was guest curated by the internationally renowned photographer, editor and curator Martin Parr.
Brighton Photo Biennial is the largest and most exciting curated photography festival in the UK and with 60,000 visitors in 2010, one of the best attended in the world.
Brighton Photo Biennial 2010: New Documents reflected the immediacy and vibrancy of contemporary photographic practice by a new generation of practitioners, the eclectic passions found in collections of historic and vernacular photography produced by commercial and amateur photographers, and presented new commissions by internationally celebrated photographers informed and inspired by the diverse communities and contexts of Brighton & Hove.
Artists and photographers include: Wout Berger (NLD), Mohamed Bourouissa (DZ), Alejandro Chaskielberg (ARG), Josef Heinrich Darchinger (DEU), Esteban Pastorino Diaz (ARG), Ju Duoqi (CHN), Stephen Gill (UK), Oscar Fernando Gomez (MEX), Rinko Kawauchi (JPN), Molly Landreth (USA), Oumar Ly (SEN), Dhruv Malhotra (IND), Billy Monk (ZAF), Suzanne Opton (USA), Viviane Sassen (NLD), Alec Soth (USA) and Zoe Strauss (USA). Many of these artists will visit Brighton & Hove to present on their work during the Biennial Opening Weekend.
The curated programme was presented in partner venues: Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Fabrica, Lighthouse, the University of Brighton Gallery and an unusual, alternative exhibition space, and working with Design Council Archives and Photoworks all in the centre of Brighton & Hove. Visitors could view the entire Biennial programme by foot. All the images were pinned onto the wall, making BPB 2010 the first frame-free photography festival in the world.
A related programme of photography exhibitions was presented in Biennial partner venues across the South East: Aspex (Portsmouth), Pallant House Gallery (Chichester), Towner (Eastbourne) and De La Warr Pavilion (Bexhill on Sea).
The BPB 2010 education programme responded to Parr's curatorial vision. Multi-platform, artist led projects will present projected, texted, installed, moving, mobile and online photographic images during the Biennial period created by young people from Brighton & Hove and across the South East.
Finally, the Biennial Opening Weekend, from Friday 1 - Sunday 3 October, was a must-attend event for anyone seriously interested in photography, offering the opportunity to meet BPB 2010 visiting artists, discuss and debate the latest issues in contemporary photography and browse new books at the Publishers Hub. Early bird discounted tickets were available for purchase until Sunday 5 September.
BPB 2010 exhibitions were open to the public on 2 October until 14 November 2010. All exhibitions were free admission to. Visit, participate and have your say by posting comments.
All the photographs exhibited as part of BPB 2010 were produced using HP professional photo quality print in the Biennial Print Studio established for the first time with University of Brighton providing space during the summer. BPB 2010 worked in partnership with HP, the world's largest technology company, and Blurb, the creative publishing and marketing platform, and in association with The Sunday Times Magazine, Culture 24 and Visit Brighton. BPB 2010 regional media partner was The Argus.

Brighton Photo Biennial is an ambitious, bold and innovative festival of international photography, a challenging and stimulating event for the widest audiences, that celebrates the role of photography in everyone's lives.
The Biennial supports the presentation of the work of artists from a range of cultural backgrounds, commissioning new work, premiering recent work and exhibiting historical work in new contexts for both the general public and art specialists. The Biennial is a partnership organisation and works with a diverse and exciting range of galleries, visual arts organisations and educational institutions in the city of Brighton & Hove and in cities and venues across the South East region. Its founding partners are the University of Brighton, which hosts the Biennial office and Photoworks, the UK’s leading visual arts agency for photography that commissions new work, produces exhibitions and publications and initiates research and education programmes. The Biennial also works in close partnership with Brighton Photo Fringe by collaborating on various projects and creating joint platforms. Brighton Photo Fringe supports the wider community of photographers and lens-based artists by opening up spaces, co-ordinating participatory projects and creating opportunities for emerging practitioners.
Brighton Photo Biennial runs a continuous Education Programme that is active during and between Biennials, creating grass roots projects with local communities, artists and individuals. The Biennial delivers artist led projects with schools and a diverse range of community groups that seek to engage people in photographic practice and debate.
The Biennial began in 2003 with two further editions delivered in 2006 and 2008, of which the latter is available for ongoing commentary, updated information and education projects.
